Hi, I’m Aria Dwoskin!
I am studying Public Policy at Duke University.
Below is some background on me:
I always had a deep-rooted passion for economics, politics, and the written word. My love for books was reflected in my favorites, like The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss, and Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Beyond being an avid reader, I was also the Editor in Chief at The Berkley Spectator, my High School’s newspaper. Over the years, my interest in politics only intensified, driving me to take meaningful action. In the past, I served as a field intern for Haley Stevens’ campaign for Congresswoman during the midterm elections. This experience not only solidified my passion for government work but also deepened my understanding of its impact on society. It was truly rewarding and eye-opening to be part of the behind-the-scenes of a government campaign, and it genuinely empowered me.
I loved all things public policy and was especially passionate about how America handled sexual education. Unequal access to healthcare and sexual education opportunities disproportionately impacted minority groups such as the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, and other underserved populations— which was why I decided to start a blog. The last formal sexual education I received was in fifth grade, and I barely remembered anything from it. Unfortunately, it contained only basic information about heterosexual relationships and lacked the necessary components for a comprehensive understanding of sex. I believed there was an urgent need for Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in our schools, so that important issues like pronouns, gender identification, and sexual orientation could be discussed alongside the usual topics of protection and contraceptives. There existed a heavy stigma around discussing sex and the body processes of women, which led to the majority of women being uninformed about their own bodies. We needed to create a safe platform where these sensitive topics could be openly discussed without fear or judgment. My goal with the blog was to bring attention to this issue and create a platform where discussing sex was not taboo.
